April 1st, 2013 Sections: ianbek

During March the range of topics covered in the postcards included the following topics:

  • Calendar
    • Men altymysh zhashtamyn - to mark a personal jubilee – my 60th birthday – I take a look at age in Kyrgyz traditional culture – 08/03/13
    • Questions, questions - Pi day - commemorating the irrational mathematical constant, Einstein’s Birthday and International Ask a Question Day - 14/03/13
    • Day against Cyber Censorship - a “unique” commemorative day in that it was once officially sanctioned by the United Nations, but had that recognition withdrawn by UNESCO – 12/03/13.
    • Playing truant -  The kids are not in school today … but it’s OK, it’s all official and above board – they are not playing truant. Today is a public holiday – Norus.  If, however, they had been in Poland, then they could well have been playing truant … it’s a tradition there to do a Ferris Bueller and take a day off on March 21st – 21/03/13

  • Celestial Mountains
    • Boat trips on Lake Issyk Kul - A popular excursion on many tours – 03/03/13
    • Wider horizons - One of the problems with trying yo attract tourists to Kyrgyzstan is that it is a small country, (that few people know much about), so many of our visitors actually visit two or three countries – for example, along the Silk Road – and so I looked at what sort of experiences are possible in the wider region of Central Asia –  10/03/13
    • Getting around - Transport options for travelling around Kyrgyzstan – 17/03/13
    • A place to lay your head … - Accommodation options in Kyrgyzstan – 24/03/13
