Camels are great for trekking, by the way, at least the ones I’ve ridden — so far. And if they get annoyed, they do ‘spit’ on you — but it is not mucus but rather the contents of one of their forward digestive compartments — green with an unpleasant smell. This, thankfully, is not based on personal information. For some time, there were bands of feral camels living in California’s Mojave Desert, released by their owners when they didn’t come in quite as handy as expected during the Gold Rush days. I don’t know if they are still there.
