Many thanks for these fascinating comments. It looks pretty horrid from our media and I hope that in Bishkek you are safe and well. Also that some people are still coming. I can imagine it must be pretty worrying for you.

Good to hear from you and your postcard... I was wondering how anyone is going to investigate the claim that the Bakievs financed the people who started things off in the south. I mean it would be great if it could be proved, but I just don't see how it can be done.

Incidentally there was a report on BBC radio 4, some bloke, which in tone was really quite unsympathetic to the interim regime, markedly hostile if you listened. This is not the normal correspondent, a woman, who is I think based in Bishkek, but some geezer flown out from London. I was wondering why the hostility... and then it occurred to me that maybe if this one-time PR man for the Bakiev regime, a British citizen but with some Soviet-flavoured name (which I can't remember) and who used to work at the BBC, accused of complicity in the Bakievs' theft of money from the Kyrgyz Republic and who was in custody in Bishkek... well then I wondered if that
guy's continued detention might not have something to do with it... Any news of this guy, by the way?

In response to your query about the 'moral course': I think your current actions are very appropriate.
By offering your opinions to the travel industry you give individuals and operators the basis to make their own decisions.

As in Bangkok, tourists are not the target of resentment. With unrest confined to the southern part of the country the risks of travel in Kyrgyzstan, in my view, continue to be minimal. Visitors need to take reasonable care for their own safety and being informed is part of that. What you are currently doing for clients continues to be the 'moral course'.

Thank you again for an excellent and measured response to the troubles in Kyrgyzstan.

Unfortunately, as expected in the American media, only the most violent or lurid news from remote places like Kyrgyzstan make the news. But Kyrgyzstan has been featured on the news every day. Sadly, it seems to be reported as if the ethnic Kyrgyz are all the bad guys and the ethnic Uzbeks have always been getting a bad deal and this is just somewhat worse. Although it is usually mentioned that it seems the conflict has been instigated, and that the instigation was likely from the deposed president's camp, yours was the first news I have had that it was Bakiev's son. (Admittedly, I haven't been searching hard for it, either.)

Again, thank you for your interesting and informative "postcards."

Thanks again for continously updating us on the situation in Kyrgyzstan. Obviously we hear about it in the news - but then, the articles are not as long and detailed as yours, and it always seems to me that it is all brought back ONLY to ethnic tensions...

I hope that what you write about people trying to build bridges, restore relations, etc, shows some success during the next days / weeks / months...
